Help for Genealogists and Researchers (Lucas County)
Here are a few things you may find useful to your success.
Save your sources! Nothing is worse than finding something wonderful and then not being able to find it again. Set up a logical file system for the digital records. One way is on your computer. Another way is that sources can be added to any Find-a-Grave memorials as attached images with an attached note of the citation, so the proof of vital record data will be right there. The sexton's logbook ID number & burial date and Funeral Home can be added to the gravesite details field in FindaGrave.com.
Primary vs. secondary sources:
Primary sources are more dependable as they are records that were created by someone who made an accurate record near the time of the event. [e.g. birth, death, marriage & burial log (or lot card) records, obituaries, old tombstones with inscriptions, court documents, military records, original cemetery deeds & lot cards.] Death certificates most times list the cemetery (see our tools page). Pre-1970 Toledo Blade obituaries many times list the cemetery (see TLCPL Blade search). Due to accuracies, it is a good practice to find 2-3 sources to confirm each fact.
Secondary sources are information created by someone who has interpreted an event or facts. [e.g. more recent obituaries, newspaper articles &/or biographies, tombstones that look to be newer, transcibed burial logs & lot cards, spreadsheet data, books, Find-a-Grave data, and public family trees. ] These provide wonderful hints for research, but should always be verified. When using on-line services like Fold 3, ancestry.com or familysearch.org, try not to document from the index. Take time to go to the original source - if it is available. These on-line services have citation text that can be copied and attached as a note to a source image.
